Mayor, Council Break Ground at Future Site of Park West/Bessemer Roundabout

By Martine Wolfe-Miller, Communications Officer

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (Oct. 22, 2015) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page and Mount Pleasant Town Council broke ground at the future site of the Park West Boulevard and Bessemer Road Roundabout today. This was the second groundbreaking ceremony in less than a week highlighting progress made on the ambitious Capital Improvement Program. In attendance were Council members Elton Carrier, Paul Gawrych, Ken Glasson, Chris Nickels, Chris O’Neal, Gary Santos. Mark Smith and Thomasena Stokes-Marshall.

Scheduled for completion in March 2016, the project will call on the combined efforts of the Mount Pleasant Transportation Department, Gulfstream Construction and Stantec.

“The Park West/Bessemer roundabout project is important to our Long Range Transportation Plan,” said Mayor Page. “This capital improvement project was initiated through numerous citizen requests to mitigate traffic in this high-growth area, and we have listened. A single-lane roundabout with a separate right-turn lane onto Bessemer Road will provide safe and efficient traffic flow at the intersection.”

Transportation Engineer and Project manager Paul Lykins urged caution while entering the construction zone. “Traffic control will include intermittent lane closures with flagging operations. It may take a little while for residents to adjust to new driving patterns. We ask that residents traveling in this area allow a few extra minutes of driving time and that they obey all traffic laws during construction of the project,” added Lykins.

Questions during construction of the Park West Boulevard and Bessemer Road Roundabout project may be directed to Ed Barbee at or via phone at (842) 640-2422.

New Dog Park in Park West

Reprinted from Examiner.Com

On poodles, on boxers, on collies and labs! Bring them all to the brand spanking new Canine Facility, Mount Pleasant's first municipal dog park at the Park West Recreational Complex.

Nestled tightly around a pond, the fenced-in dog park gives our canine friends a chance to romp around, splash in the water, and enjoy the fresh air amongst other doggie friends. There's plenty of room for your kids to throw a ball, or just chase their favorite pal around.

And no worries, the fence keeps any local gators out of the dog area.

It's a great way to give your doggy pal plenty of free-roaming exercise and add to their quality of life, plus it's on your schedule because it's not always easy to enjoy the local beaches and their dog hours.

This dog park has rules like any other, most importantly that Dog owners must be 18 (or accompanied by an adult), dogs must have up-to-date vaccinations, waste disposal courtesies apply, and small puppies under 4 months of age are not allowed.

Other rules are posted, so be a responsible dog owner so that we can all continue to enjoy the doggie park.

Note that the park does not have separate areas to separate small and largedogs, so if that is a concern and you have a small dog, try to find a time wherethe park is not as busy, or schedule an official play group time with other smallish pooches.

Another, much larger, Dog Park is in the planning stage, purportedly to be somewhere off of Rifle Range Road.

There are other county dog parks at the James Island County Park, North Charleston Wannamaker County Park, and Mt.Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park.

See you there - woof!
